Stephen King’s IT [1986]

If its horror you crave then Stephen King’s IT  packs it from cover to cover. In the 1986 publication, seven childhood friends are brought back together after almost three decades to battle an ominous entity that feeds on children and takes the form of their innermost fears. Although the entity’s true form is revealed at the end, it’s most common form is that of a clown known as Pennywise . However, to each of the friends it manifests as something different, a large bird, a leper, the mummy and even dead people. While the novel is in its core a horror story, it is also a coming of age story that deals with abuse, guilt, sex, love and basically everything we experience growing up. It is graphic, thrilling and at times disturbing and shocking especially when details of the friends’ childhood encounter with It. The sexual activity portrayed in the book in the final part, The Ritual of Chüd, is rather scandalously pedophilic and at times perverted especially when an eleven y...

Stephen King’s Doctor Sleep

Image
Characters often remain forgotten after their stories have been told in books. However, with Doctor Sleep , the master of macabre Stephen King continues Danny Torrance’s struggle with his Shining gift. If you've always wondered what happened to Danny after the Overlook Hotel burnt down, then this book fills that void. Set years after the events in The Shining , Danny is now an adult and in his attempt to be normal tries to drown his gift with alcohol. This of course has serious consequences and leads him on a path that his father took. He drifts across the country and finally settles into a job where remnants of his gift provide comfort for the dying. Soon he encounters the evanescent Abra Stone who has the most spectacular and brightest shining he has ever seen and being alike, she soon reaches out to him. However, when an evil tribe of people called the True Knot come calling, Danny must face his own demons and summon his inner strength to save Abra. This time Danny...

Stephen King's Desperation (1996)

Image
The master of horror and the creepy Stephen King definitely sets a feeling of desperation in his 1996 novel “Desperation”. A fictional town created by the master of the macabre and horror, she becomes host to a terrifying evil that has just been let loose from the pits of the Earth. The appropriately titled novel tells the story of several travelers who are seemingly abducted randomly and brought to the town by the local sheriff. Unfortunately, from the very beginning they find out that things are now well in this mining town. King tells the story from several point of views, each character developed independently yet as they are drawn closer become intertwined like strands that come together to make a rope. Each has their own perspective on evil and beliefs. However, the most interesting character is David Carver. Carver is the main character that had me glued to the book. He had a certain mystery about him that King would eventually reveal but it made the story more diges...
